Karna — the son of Kunti and the Sun God Surya, and the King of Anga — was among the greatest warriors of the Mahabharata. He is remembered above all as “Daanveer”, the one who never turned away anyone who came to him for charity.
Legend tells that Karna founded a settlement here that came to be known as Karnal (“the abode of Karna”). It is said he would bathe each morning at the tank now called Karna Lake (Karna Tal) and give away gold in charity before taking any food. The whole region forms part of the ancient Kuru kingdom — and the great war of the Mahabharata was fought on the nearby plains of Kurukshetra, only about 40 km away.
